A West Ham fan has looked back on the moment his heart stopped and he was left with a brain injury after a brutal and unprovoked attack.
David Summerfield travelled from Bracknell to London to see his team play in the Premier League in October 2018.
After spending the day cheering the team on, Mr Summerfield was on his way home at Waterloo station with a friend when he was punched in a unprovoked attack.
His head hit the ground so hard that his heart stopped.
A heroic junior doctor who happened to be passing the station leapt to the rescue, beginning CPR before paramedics arrived.
This crucial intervention helped until London’s Air Ambulance’s advanced trauma team arrived just eight minutes after being called.
The London Air Ambulance service said David suffered a traumatic brain injury and needed immediate help from their staff.
While in their care, he was quickly induced into a coma to protect his brain from further injury and taken by ambulance to The Royal London Hospital less than an hour after the first 999 call.
Three years on, he said: “I’m just overwhelmed by the amount of effort that went in to saving my life."
Following the attack, David returned home with his wife and two kids.
The effects of his brain injury continue, but thanks to the quick reactions from emergency services he lived to tell the tale.
He added: "They (The London Air Ambulance) are incredible. I can’t believe that I’ve been saved from the trauma I received."
