Every village needs its pubs, even if that village is nestled in the middle of a bustling north London borough.

The Ham&High is looking at communities across its north London readership area, drawing on the Lost Pubs Project, which archives the decline of the English pub.

This week we look at Muswell Hill - where the project's website www.closedpubs.co.uk lists five pubs that have closed their doors for the last time.

The Alexandra Arms

Situated at 156 Colney Hatch Lane, this pub closed in 2017.

Arthur Elliot wrote on the site in 2018 how saddened he was to discover it had closed.

He wrote: "We as a team of footballers frequented the Minstrel Boy pub in the late 1950s.

"We would play our match on Sunday morning then hot foot it to the pub, as we were only about 17/18 at the time we weren’t supposed to be in there.

"The landlady at the time used to allow us in as we were a well behaved bunch so we were privileged.

"I am now 76 and was saddened to find out it had closed. We had some great times there and had great respect for our hosts."
