Whether you’re a seasoned collector of luxury men’s watches or searching for the ideal Father’s Day gift, discovering timeless quality matched with expert craftsmanship can be challenging.

Each Grand Seiko watch is a beautiful, unique luxury accessory that effortlessly combines these two aspects. Each watch is handmade by artisans in Japan, crafted to an exceptionally high standard.

“Grand Seiko was introduced as a luxury watch in the 1960s, and until recently was only available for purchase in Japan and China,” reveals Peter Mellor, watch specialist at R L Austen in Chichester.

We sit down with Peter Mellor, watch manager at R L Austen in Chichester, to discuss the elegance of the Grand Seiko collection, their longevity and what sets them apart.

1. A variety of perennial watches

Whilst every watch originates within the serene glades of the Iwate prefecture and majestic mountains of Shinshu, each piece has its own character and aesthetic. Grand Seiko watches are divided into distinct collections that embody the Japanese reverence for time and harmony.

“Each watch is a unique symbol of the Japanese respect for refinement,” says Peter. “Grand Seiko have a number of collections that embody a particular aspect of life. The Elegance collection combines an exceptional classic aesthetic with the resilience to be worn daily, whilst the Sport range offers alluring watches with impeccable legibility for athletic activities.”

Grand Seiko have recently unveiled the new Evolution 9 collection – a series of technologically advanced watches infused with the deep traditions of Japan. “The number nine is considered to be particularly auspicious within Japanese culture,” shares Peter.

“Nine in Japanese is pronounced ‘kyu,’ with its own kanji symbol. However, a different kanji symbol with the same ‘kyu’ pronunciation and translates as ‘the ultimate’. The new collection is greatly inspired by this extraordinary link, and embodies the watchmaker’s ambition to balance legibility, durability and beauty.”

2. Contemporary Japanese designs

Drawing from the deep roots of harmony and balance that permeate all aspects of Japanese culture, watchmaking artisans create exquisite, contemporary pieces imbued with a distinguished heritage. Since the creation of the original Grand Seiko in 1960, every subsequent piece has taken direct inspiration from this classic design whilst expanding the creative horizon.

“By clearly setting how their watches would look in the future, Grand Seiko have achieved a fantastic balance between traditional quality and contemporary designs,” reveals Peter. “Heritage is central to Grand Seiko’s philosophy, and it translates into matchless quality.”

“The price range for such exceptional timepieces ranges from £2000 to £10,000. However, Grand Seiko also offer prized limited editions which can often exceed £50,000.”

3. Masterfully fashioned timepieces

In order to consistently create marvellous watches, Grand Seiko require craftspeople who have truly mastered their profession and still strive for perfection. Takumi artisans are individuals who have honed their skills to a razor-sharp point, over the course of at least 25 years. Using their comprehensive knowledge of watchmaking, these dedicated artisans always discover new inspirations and innovations.

“The interplay between shadow and light holds a place of reverence within Japanese culture, and the artisans of Grand Seiko take great care to uphold this balance in their work,” explains Peter.

“Takumi artisans are craftsmen and women who are unrivalled in their particular field. They have spent many years honing their skills and apply an extremely high level of expertise to watchmaking.”

“Zeratsu polishing is an excellent example of these traditional techniques, and how they increase the quality and sophistication of Grand Seiko watches. The timepieces and their cases are finely polished to create a brilliant, distortion-free mirrored finish using this distinctive method.”

“The completely unique Spring Drive movement is a testament to their ingenuity. The level of precision that the Spring Drive delivers is unrivalled, made possible by the rare mastery of both electronic and mechanical watchmaking.”

4. Long-lasting masterpieces

As a luxury watchmaker, Grand Seiko utilise only the finest materials to create each stunning timepiece. From stainless steel to titanium, gold to platinum, each material has a unique impact on the aesthetic and durability of the watch.

“The materials are of the very highest quality, and special care is made to ensure they feel comfortable on your wrist”, says Peter. “Depending on your preferences, each metal can bring something different. The stainless steel won’t rust or discolour, ensuring a timeless gleam whilst titanium is exceptionally long-lasting and robust, making the watch a true gift for life.”
