Four London have been named some of the best gastropubs in the UK by Big 7 Travel.

The Anchor & Hope in Southwark placed 34th whilst The Marksman in Hackney was named 18th.

Just missing out on the top ten spots, The Hero of Maida in Shirland Road, Maida Vale placed 12th whilst The Red Lion & Sun in Highgate got the highest place for London at 9th.

The list was determined from a combined score of reader suggestions throughout the year, online user reviews and Big 7 Travel's editorial team.

Having been in existence for a couple of years now, the list is looking out for those establishments that went above and beyond just ordinary pub grub.

The full list of the 50 gastropubs can be seen on the Big 7 Travel website here.

What did Big 7 Travel have to say about the gastropubs?

Speaking about London's highest-ranking gastropub The Red Lion & Sun, Big 7 Travel said: "Tucked away in rural Highgate Village, this excellent 1920s pub feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the capital.

"Dig into modern British grub done very well and enjoy the warm atmosphere. It’s certainly one of the best gastropubs in the UK."

The Red Lion & Sun also has an impressive Tripadivsor rating with an average of 4.5/5.

Meanwhile, The Anchor & Hope in Southwark is also well-rated on Tripadvisor with a 4/5 score from over 700 reviews.

Speaking of the establishment, Big 7 Travel said The Anchor & Hope is "One of the UK’s leading gastropubs."

Adding: "The Anchor & Hope is famous for its seven-hour lamb shoulder. This popular pub doesn’t take reservations, so you’ll more than likely have to wait a while for a table, but it’s worth it.

"Order some nibbles at the bar if you’re too hungry to wait – the potted shrimps and toast is divine."
