When the official growth figures were released last month the Chancellor Jeremy Hunt proclaimed it as a cause for celebration as we narrowly avoided a recession.
The reality is that the economy grew just 0.01% at the end of last year and the IMF has warned that the UK faces the weakest growth of any country in the G7.
Only this Conservative government would celebrate that at a time when interest rates are soaring and inflation is hitting record highs.
On top of this, we are facing the deepest cost-of-living crisis in a generation and many of my constituents in Hampstead and Kilburn are asking themselves if they are better off after the last decade. The answer for many is no.
The economy is in a dire state after 13 years of Conservative government and we need a proper plan to tackle this crisis.
That is why as shadow economic secretary to the Treasury I have been working to develop policies that would rebuild our economy and put working people at the centre of our recovery.
In the media I have been arguing for better support for those struggling and as I told presenters, we would stop the planned hike to the energy price cap in April and introduce new measures to pass on recent falls in gas prices to households immediately.
When questioned on what Labour would do, I set out our plan to bring in a nationwide home insultation programme and end the penalty imposed on prepayment meter customers to ensure they do not pay more than those paying by direct debit.
And we would pay for this by finally bringing in a proper windfall tax on energy companies who have enjoyed record profits this year. It is simply not fair that the Government continues to refuse to do so when my constituents are struggling to heat their homes or put food on the table.
I have been leading Labour's focus on securing green finance so that we can deliver clean power by 2030 by investing in the green technologies and jobs of the future.
Until we have a Labour government, who will fix the economy and cut our energy bills for good, I will keep pushing for more support for my constituents who are struggling.
