A thrill-seeking nurse is set to jump out of a plane after her work at a north London hospice made her realise that she “should seize the moment and live for now”.

Sarah Wilsher, a nurse at North London Hospice in Finchley since 2018, is set to complete the skydive on March 4.

The hospice offers care to patients from Barnet, Enfield and Haringey with life-limiting and terminal-illnesses.

Sarah, 36, will be jumping out of the plane to raise money for the hospice, which she described as a “wonderful place that supports patients and families through emotional and tough journeys”.

The plane will fly from an airbase in Peterborough and Sarah has set herself a target of raising £1,500.

She said she had always been a “bit of a daredevil” but that this took a back seat as she got older.

But her experiences at the hospice made her rethink as she realised that “today and tomorrow are not promised”.

Sarah started working at the hospice as part of its palliative care support team and is now a bank nurse at weekends.

Speaking about her work at the hospice, Sarah said: “It is so rewarding to be able to give back to someone in the last part of their journey through life.

“We meet so many lovely families and being able to support them is a real privilege.”

One story that has stuck with Sarah was that of a patient in aged his 50s who was dying from cancer, as was his father.

The pair had been looked after at different hospitals so had not seen each other for four months.

Sarah said: “We put their beds together in the lounge area to give them more space and they held hands.

“It was a really touching moment because the patient's wife was there and was so appreciative that both her husband and son got some time together at the end.”

Sarah also praised the other staff at North London Hospice: “The team are fantastic and amazing at what they do. It’s like a real family.”
