Online giant Amazon has applied for an alcohol licence at a planned “retail store”, raising suspicions that another Amazon Fresh supermarket is set to open.

The application for an alcohol licence at 156 West End Lane in West Hampstead was submitted in January.

This document reveals that the licence would be for a premises that would "operate as a retail store”.

The store is described as being “not alcohol-led”, and providing “general grocery and household goods”.

The licence would be for 9am to 11pm, seven days a week, a period identical to the opening hours of Amazon Fresh stores in London.

If confirmed, the West Hampstead Amazon Fresh store would be part of a new development at 156 West End Lane, which is also set to contain 164 new homes.

Amazon Fresh stores do not have cashiers or physical checkouts like regular supermarkets.

Instead, shoppers enter the stores by scanning a QR code on their Amazon app.

Cameras in store then track what customers put in their bag and charge items to their Amazon account once they have left.

There are currently 19 Amazon Fresh stores across London, including one in Chalk Farm.

A spokesperson for Amazon said that they did not have any further details about new store openings at this time.

Residents have until February 9 to make representations to Camden Council about the premises licence application.
