The fishmonger in Swain's Lane has become the latest commercial casualty since the area underwent a multi-million pound redevelopment.

Bourne's, which also runs Superette next door, is up for sale and will close in the new year.

"It's up for sale at the moment. It's all I know at the moment, "Greg Ivison, Bourne's manager, said.

The fishmonger, owned by John Long, opened in 2020, joining its other stores in Highgbury and Belsize Park.

At the time it was one of a clutch of new businesses set up in the parade following its redevelopment by Noble House Properties.

In July, the parade's first business, The Wine Cellar, closed permanently, having failed to recover from the pandemic. The shop remains empty.

Asked about trading in the current climate, Greg added: "The footfall has gone down. During the pandemic everyone was buying local but since then everyone's gone back to the supermarket.

"Now with the cost of living increasing people are looking at what they can get for their money.

"I don't mean that in a negative way. All the prices are going up for everything including all high end products.

"If you can go to a supermarket to get salmon, you're not going to go to a fishmonger. It's tough trading in that."

He added: "The owner is looking to focus on Superette so we'll move over to the deli. We want to make sure other staff are looked after. One of the fishmongers wants to retrain as a barista."

Troy Dickerson, manager of Meat N6, quashed local rumours that the butcher was in peril.

"This year hasn't been the best of times," he said. "People are a bit tight for cash but business has picked up a bit now.

"We're always going to busy at Christmas but we got through the pandemic. It's been iffy but it's good now."

He said avian bird flu has been "a bit of a problem" with fewer free range birds available.

"For turkeys we use different suppliers, we don't put all our eggs in the same basket. One of them is completely out so we rely on the others.

"They say we're going into a deep recession but it's been feeling like we're in it now with high inflation.

"I don't know why but things seem to be improving for us here."

A spokesperson for Bourne's said on December 23: "After an exciting five years at Bournes HQ, John Long and his partner are parting ways to allow them to focus on their areas of expertise.

"John and Lucy Long are taking on the Superette stores, while Bournes will be downsized to their flagship store in Highbury Barn.

"Swain's will taken on by new owners in early January, building on the amazing community of customers that the fishmongers has created, evolving to its full potential.

"Superette will continue as it always has, with our vibrant and varied selection of hard to find, small batch and independently made products.

"We have lots to come, and we hope to collaborate further with our fellow Swains Lane traders to bring more exciting events and ideas to continue to nurture our parade in 2023."
