Welwyn Garden City shoppers share views on Tory turmoil

Theresa May faces a vote of no confidence in her leadership tonight after 48 MPs submitted letters calling for the Prime Minister to go.

Brexit has divided the nation and seemed to do so for the public in Welwyn Garden City.

Paul Bishop, 57, who works in Welwyn Garden City, is a strong Remain supporter but feels sympathy for Mrs May.

“I’m not her biggest fan but I think she has done the best she can in the circumstances.

“She inherited the mess left by David Cameron.

“The political class all seem to be fighting for themselves and as usual it will be the public who pick up the pieces.”

He added: “Brexit has occupied so much attention but the vote was so long ago and we’re still not sure what is going to happen.

“I am a socialist but Jeremy Corbyn seems to be very quiet on the issue.

“I’m not sure whether he could do a better job than May.

Harry Law, 79, and his wife Eunice, 78, who are former residents of Welwyn Garden City, feel that the Prime Minister could have performed better.

Mr Law said: “She’s not handled it well.

“We voted two and a half years ago and don’t seem to be any further forward.”

However, they both concurred that now isn’t the time for May to leave Downing Street.

Mr Law said: “We don’t want her to go now.

“There is not enough political stability as it is.”

Mrs Law added that she hopes the Conservative party remains in power.

She said: “We don’t want Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister.

“We feel that the Conservatives are the only party that will deliver Brexit.”

Louis Redding, 18, was shopping in Welwyn Garden City, and feels that May should be replaced.

“I’m not surprised that there is a confidence vote in her.

“She doesn’t seem to have achieved much regarding Brexit.

“I think it would be better if somebody else had a go but I’m not sure who can solve the problem to be honest.”
