This year, the environment has surged to the forefront of the political agenda.

In Westminster, Extinction Rebellion protests demanded politicians take radical action. They asked we declare a climate emergency and set ambitious decarbonisation targets to make the UK carbon neutral as soon as possible.

People in Brent are fully aware of the consequences of inaction on our environment. Though we all share concern about rising sea levels and the loss of biodiversity - locally, the atrocious air quality is the number one concern. That is why many of my constituents have contacted me requesting stronger action on air pollution, particularly on Chamberlayne Road. The road serves many bus routes and is highly congested with cars. Parents have expressed their concern over how pollution levels may affect their children's health, due to their attendance at nearby schools.

It is vital that we take action to make Brent's environment as safe and sustainable as possible. That's why I have been in discussions with Transport for London (TfL), expressing my constituents' wishes that buses meet ultra-low emission standards. In response, TfL informed me that 5,000 buses will be retrofitted to meet the ultra-low emission standard, which will be an important step in reducing pollution around Chamberlayne Road. But it is not enough, and I am pressing for more decisive action to be taken.

Public transport plays, and will continue to play, a crucial role in our daily life and in the fight against climate change. However, residents are also right to find toxic emissions intolerable.
