Bostik North: Haringey Borough 1 (Yiga 90) Hornchurch 2 (Fairweather-Johnson 10, McKenzie 87)

Hornchurch picked up a fourth consecutive win in the Bostik North, but had to hold on after Haringey Borough threatened to pull off a late comeback.

Urchins took control of the tie early on, with Theo Fairweather-Johnson putting the visitors in front inside 10 minutes.

A goal for each side in the final five minutes of the match ensured a dramatic end to the game, but the visitors did just enough to hold on.

Urchins took the lead in just the 10th minute through attacker Theo Fairweather-Johnson.

George Purcell delivered a delightful free kick in from near the left angle of the box which Fairweather-Johnson nodded past Boro stopper Austin Byfield.

Purcell nearly scored himself three minutes later, testing Byfield with a rasping effort from 20 yards that the home keeper could only palm behind for a corner.

With less than 15 minutes on the clock, the hosts almost drew level when Derek Asamoah shot from range.

The Haringey forward’s effort was fumbled by Sam Mott in the Hornchurch goal, but the visiting keeper was able to collect the ball before Michael O’Donoghue could tap home the rebound.

Midway through the first half, Jimmy McFarlane’s men suffered a blow when Fairweather-Johnson went off injured and was replaced by Leon McKenzie.

Despite losing the scorer of the opener, Hornchurch went close to a second, but Kenzer Lee’s header from a corner in the 37th minute was comfortable for Byfield.

On the stroke of half time, McKenzie chanced his arm with a half volley from the right angle of the box, but Byfield got down well to keep the effort out.

A minute later in stoppage time, a storming run down the left by Michael Ademiluyi for Haringey saw him tee up Joseph Benjamin, but the forward scuffed his effort wide.

With neither team able to find a goal in the closing moments of the half, Hornchurch were able to take their one-goal advantage into the break.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Benjamin went close again for Haringey, firing over from close range after a free kick dropped to him at the back post.

The hosts were making a bright start to the second period, with Ryan Hervel lashing wide from 18 yards in the 57th minute.

Seven minutes later, an Urchins corner was cleared only as far as Purcell on the edge of the area, but his effort was straight at Byfield.

Haringey, though were continuing to look more of a threat in the second half and probably should have levelled in the 68th minute.

A cross from the right from Lawrence Yiga cause confusion in the away defence, but substitute Harrison Georgiou could only bundle the ball narrowly wide of the post.

Boro continued to press, with Ghana international Asamoah having an effort deflected wide seven minutes later.

Loizou’s team were peppering the Hornchurch goal with efforts, with both Asamoah and O’Donoghue seeing efforts from close range block in quick succession in the 83rd minute.

However, with three minutes left in the match, Hornchurch secured the win through McKenzie.

The replacement headed home a Purcell corner from the left to dent the hosts’ hopes of a comeback.

Haringey did go close to pulling one back, with Anthony McDonald’s drive just pushed wide of the post by Mott a minute later.

They did have their goal in the final minute of normal time, with Yiga headed home a Ademiluyi cross from close range.

It gave the hosts a lift heading into stoppage time, but they were unable to add a second to earn a draw.
