Arsenal slipped to a 1-2 loss at home to early Division One pacesetters Manchester United, leaving Gunners boss Don Howe scratching his head.
Goals from Mark Hughes and Paul McGrath gave United the advantage before Ian Allinson - following up to score after Gary Bailey had saved Charlie Nichaolas's penalty - set up a grandstand finish in which Tony Woodcock hit the woodwork.
"I know people are fed up of hearing it, but we played well and lost," moaned Howe. United boss Ron Atkinson conceded: "Arsenal were unlucky and we were sloppy.
