Haringey Council has appointed a new chief executive to replace Ita O'Donovan in the new year.
Kevin Crompton is currently chief executive at Luton Borough Council and is a former teacher. Mr Crompton, 53, was appointed because of his strong track record of working in children's services and multi-cultural communities.
The current chief executive, Ita O'Donovan, reached retirement age in May, but she agreed to stay on to help steer the council through the aftermath of the Baby Peter tragedy.
Mr Crompton said: "I'm confident that Haringey has the potential to be an outstanding local authority. I'm looking forward to working with everyone at the council to build on the improvements which have been made in recent months and to make the borough an even better place for everyone who lives and works there."
Claire Kober, leader of the council, said: "We were determined to find an outstanding chief executive to join Haringey and are convinced that Kevin is that person. He has a fantastic track record and a wealth of experience which he will bring to the job.
"We are confident that Kevin has the necessary experience, skills and vision to help Haringey fulfil its potential and we very much look forward to working with him."
Before joining Luton in 2005, Mr Crompton was director of children's services at Solihull Metropolitan Council.
He has also worked for Surrey, Birmingham, Brent, Hackney, Lambeth and Wandsworth councils.
A cross-party appointment panel of four Labour councillors and three Liberal Democrats selected Mr Crompton. His appointment is expected to be ratified by the full council.
