Arsenal went to the top of the league for the first time in two years after hammering Southampton 4-0 at The Dell.
The turning point came when Saints 'keeper Tim Flowers was carried off with a broken cheekbone after conceding a penalty and Martin Hayes duly converted the spot kick. Viv Anderson and Niall Quinn both headed goals to make it 3-0 before John Lukic saved Danny Wallace's penalty. Perry Groves ran through late on to add a fourth to seal Arsenal's fourth successive away league win.
"We were poor at times, we are still not championship material, although it is nice to be top at the moment," said manager George Graham.
