Frozen footpaths will remain treacherous for pedestrians today (Friday) after the council decided not to grit pavements to preserve supplies.

Several roads around Camden remain also closed this morning thanks to the big chill.

Icy conditions have caused Chetwynd Road in Dartmouth Park to close after a British Gas van was abandoned by the driver after reportedly colliding with other cars and becoming stuck on the ice.

Arkwright Road in Hampstead and York Way between Kentish Town and Kings Cross are both closed because of water leaks believed to have been caused by freezing pipes bursting.

Camden council gritters are continue to concentrate on the major routes through the borough after Deputy Leader of the Town Hall Cllr Andrew Marshall admitted it was running out of grit. New supplies are expected to be delivered at some point today.

All main routes are open this morning but side roads, which have not been gritted, are still like ice rinks.

But pedestrians will need to take extra care because of icy footpaths. The Town Hall said workmen will not be spreading grit but will be use shovels to break up the ice instead.

Stephan Janes who runs the Harmood Street, Clarence Way and Hartland Road Resident's Association said: "I believe Camden's lack of action during the current adverse weather conditions is an utter disgrace. Harmood Street has not seen one bit of grit for the past two days and it is a hazard to leave the house."

But Farokh Khorooshi, of Fitzjohn's Avenue defended the council. He said: "They cannot be expected to do every pavement in the borough. It is not realistic. The question is where do we want our money spent? They cannot just blow it all on grit. I think they are doing everything they can and are much better than they have been in the past."

The weather has had several other knock on effects for the day to day running of the council today:

* Parking regulations will only be enforced on main roads only north of the Euston Road and all roads South of Euston Road. CCTV enforcement and removals will continue across the whole borough.

* Transport services will not be running today and all affected clients have been contacted.

* On council housing estates prioritised gritting on walkways is being carried out to preserve supplies as possible.

* A number of Decent Homes sites have been closed for health and safety reasons, although work is continuing where possible; albeit on a reduced scale.

A council spokeswoman said York Way and Chetwynd Road could be reopened later today (Friday).
