Graham Rix played as a temporary striker for the visit of Coventry - scoring one and setting up another in a 2-1 win.
The left-sided midfielder opened the scoring after only three minutes and then saw his free kick spilled by Coverntry goalkeeper Les Sealey, with Tony Woodcock firing home the loose ball.
Gunners boss Terry Neill, who was running in the London Marathon the following morning, said: "Rix plays well when he plays up front because he is difficult to pin down - the lad made us tick in the first half.
