Esther Rantzen's bid to become an MP has ended dismally. The Hampstead independent campaigner polled just 1,872 in a seat comfortably won by the Labour candidate who replaced Margaret Moran in the wake of the expenses scandal.
Some observers believe that like many independent candidates, she was a victim of the televised debates which focused the public's attention on the three main parties.
The seat saw an 8 per cent swing to the Tories, in a constituency contested by no fewer than 10 candidates.
One consolation for Esther is that she collected almost 600 more votes than the BNP candidate.
