Tottenham are bracing themselves for a Manchester United bid for Luka Modric after the Croatian admitted that “a transfer is possible”.

The midfielder, who is currently on international duty, signed a six-year contract with the Lilywhites last May, and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy recently stressed that the club “shall simply not entertain any approaches” for their key players this summer.

The club maintain that any bids for Modric will be rejected, and the player insists that he “has everything he needs” at White Hart Lane.

However the 25-year-old concedes that his experience of Champions League football last season whetted his appetite for a return to Europe’s top table – and he admits that he would consider leaving Tottenham if a bid was accepted.

“Everybody wants to know what will happen with me, so I will tell you the same as always – my club status is the same as it was before,” said Modric.

“But of course, if there will be an offer which will be good for Tottenham and for me also, then a transfer is of course possible.

“That doesn’t mean that I’m bothered with leaving Tottenham – I’m not thinking about that every hour and every minute.

“I’m happy at White Hart Lane – my status is great, the fans like me and I do have everything I need.

“But then again, when you experience playing in the Champions League, you want to keep playing in this tournament.”

The concern for Spurs fans is that Modric’s comments came on the same day that Paul Scholes announced his retirement at Manchester United.

Tottenham’s Player of the Year is seen by many people as the perfect man to replace Scholes at Old Trafford, and

the thought has apparently occurred to Sir Alex Ferguson, who has publicly stated that Modric would have been his choice for the PFA Player of the Year.

Spurs fans are used to seeing their biggest talents lured to the Theatre of Dreams, having seen Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov leave for Manchester in 2006 and 2008 respectively. However, Harry Redknapp has quickly quelled talk of Modric following suit.

“All of our key players are under contract,” he said today. “The chairman and I have discussed this and we have no intention of selling any of them.

“They are at a top club and we are looking to improve the squad in the summer, not weaken it, in order to push for a Champions League place again next season.”
