Camden’s pubs and clubs pride themselves on discovering ‘new talent’ and every now and again, it happens to be the real thing.
Just months ago 22-year-old Lianne La Havas was seducing regulars at the Torriano pub’s Live Lounge in Kentish Town with her easy yet accomplished guitar style, clever lyrics and soulful voice.
Now, from playing in front of 30 or 40 people at open mic nights on a Sunday evening, she has been seen by millions on what is by far the best music programme on mainstream television - the ever-dependable Jools Holland Show.
The charming Lianne has a distinctive style and writes her own songs, so in my book she’s already a cut above the calibre of ‘talent’ churned out by the likes of The X Factor.
Refreshingly her Jools performance, aired last week, included an ode to older men.
Hopefully she’ll be responsible for a new trend…
Lianne seems bound for stardom. Sharing the bill with Buddy Greco in her first television appearance is certainly a giant step in the right direction.
So far so swimmingly, as the girl herself says.
