A turf war is officially over after a bowls club and croquet club announced on Sunday that they would be embarking on a new future together at The Green in Parliament Hills Field.

Parliament Hill Bowls Club and Hampstead Heath Croquet Club tentatively came together for a trial period last May after the future of the bowls club was put under threat.

The City of London Corporation, who spend 30,000 annually on The Green’s running costs, wanted to get more use out of the lawn to justify its upkeep, leading to the clubs coming together.

Bowls club president, Derek Mennell, said: “This new venture brings together two sports not usually highlighted in the mainstream and demonstrates the huge enthusiasm for sport in both clubs.”

Croquet club co-founder Ian Harrison said: “The generous hospitality of the bowls club will bring new life to croquet in Hampstead.”

Parliament Hill Bowls Club will celebrate its 75th anniversary playing at The Green this year.
