Students were given an insight into the intricacies of the political system when a leading peer visited their sixth form on Friday.
Baroness Joan Bakewell visited Francis Holland School in Park Road, Regent’s Park, to discuss the House of Lords and answer questions on the parliamentary process and life at Westminster.
Vivienne Durham, headmistress of the independent girls’ school, said: “This was an invaluable opportunity for our students to meet someone who knows the parliamentary system extremely well.
“Baroness Bakewell inspired the sixth form and explained the relevance of the work at the Palace of Westminster to our daily lives.”
Year 13 pupil Florence Alexander said: “As a student of history and politics, it was fascinating to realise how much of what I study has a bearing on politics.
“The Baroness said her understanding of history is fundamental to being an effective member of the House of Lords, so I am excited to be applying to study it at university.”
The visit was arranged through the Peers In Schools scheme which has been sending members of the House of Lords into schools and colleges since 2007.
