Wingate & Finchley have continued their pre-season campaign with two home defeats – an 8-3 hammering by St Albans City on Saturday and then a narrow 2-1 loss against Redbridge last night.

The opening half against St Albans was a tight affair, with the visitors taking the lead after a save from Cain Davies was parried into the path of Warren McBean.

W&F drew level when Sean Grace found Ola Sogbanmu in the penalty area, and he did well to turn and fire home from close range.

The game then changed as Sam Corcoran scored two deflected efforts for the visitors in two minutes. The first was a 25-yard free kick which hit the wall and found the bottom right corner.

He repeated this from open play moments later, beating the unfortunate and helpless Davies.

The deficit was halved again with a superb attack on the half-hour mark when Gavin Suddell picked out Sogbanmu, who turned the ball home for his second close-range strike.

St Albans scored two goals at the start of the second half before the pace of the game slowed considerably and, with 10 minutes remaining, the visitors scored two more goals within a minute.

An eighth St Albans goal followed in injury time before new signing Nico Muir grabbed Wingate’s third goal of the game - and his second for the club - with a clever backheeled effort.

On Tuesday night Redbridge grabbed an early goal through Lee Newton, who chipped Davies after beating the W&F offside trap.

Rob Laney headed home an equaliser for Wingate, after a brilliant overhead cross from Marc Weatherstone, but poor marking allowed Leon Smith to head home the winner with five minutes remaining.

W&F entertain Conference side Wealdstone on Saturday at 3pm.

Meanwhile, goals from Lee O’Leary and Michael Murray secured another pre-season win for Hendon at Tring Athletic yesterday evening.

The Greens travelled to Hertfordshire with their latest signings Kezie Ibe and Sam Murphy in the squad but suffered a blow in the first minute when former Wealdstone striker Peter Dean was substituted after injuring his groin.

Hendon goalkeeper George Legg showed good reflexes early on to deny Stewart King but the tide turned when O’Leary opened the scoring with a well-placed low drive from the edge of the penalty area.

A defensive mix-up between Elliott Brathwaite and Bobby Sturgeon allowed the lively King to equalise for Tring but Murray restored Hendon’s lead with a smart finish after good work from Ryan O’Sullivan.

Hendon vist Leverstock Green tomorrow at 6:30pm.
