Former British hostage John McCarthy was joined by the negotiator who helped to free him at a Hampstead museum.

Journalist Mr McCarthy, who was kidnapped by Islamic Jihad terrorists in Lebanon in 1986 and held for more than five years, interviewed former UN negotiator Giandomenico Picco and psychotherapist Gabrielle Rifkind at the Freud Museum, Maresfield Gardens, on Wednesday of last week.

Mr Picco and Ms Rifkind, who works in conflict resolution in the Middle East, were speaking about their recent co-authored book The Fog of Peace: The Human Face.

Mr McCarthy said: “I think it’s a very, incredibly important time for this book to be out, particularly with what’s going on in the Middle East, where both Gianni and Gabrielle have great experience.”

The event was held as part of the museum’s Why War? exhibition, which came to an end on Sunday.
