Mauricio Pochettino’s men can focus on the league for the next week and they will hope to build up some momentum ahead of a crucial December

What a difference a few days can make? On Saturday Tottenham Hotspur fans were quite rightly disappointed and frustrated after seeing local rivals Arsenal take the north London derby bragging rights.

But fast forward to Tuesday night and Spurs could reflect on a very good achievement – topping a Champions League group including Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

It means the displeasure voiced after the battle at the Emirates has quietly gone away now and Tottenham can look forward to taking on West Bromwich Albion this weekend with renewed hope.

Saturday won’t be easy though with the Baggies sacking Tony Pulis on Monday and initially putting Gary Megson in charge of first-team affairs until further notice.

Whether Megson is on the touchline at Wembley or not remains to be seen, but what can be expected is a West Brom side which may now have a slight lift.

Under Pulis, the Baggies were sliding down the table and the 4-0 loss at home to Chelsea last weekend proved the final straw.

West Brom have suffered defeats in their last four games, but will likely provide Spurs with another tough test at Wembley.

Crystal Palace were only just broken down thanks to a Heung-min Son goal on November 5 and Tottenham will need to be patient again this weekend despite holding an excellent recent record over the Midlands club.

After hosting West Brom, the north Londoners then have a trip to Leicester City on Tuesday night in what is another important week for the club.

The Foxes, now under the stewardship of Claude Puel, put up a stubborn resistance at home to Manchester City last weekend before going down 2-0.

Spurs can expect a similar type of game, but after their setback at the Emirates, they need to put together a winning run in the Premier League again.

Manchester City are running away with the title and lead nearest challengers Manchester United by eight points, but second to sixth-place is more congested.

United have 26 points with Chelsea (25) just behind them and Spurs (23) one place further back with Liverpool (22) and Arsenal (22) still currently out of the top-four positions.

But after the next two league games, Tottenham will hope to have built up some momentum ahead of a crucial December, which could decide whether a top-four finish is the aim or if the title is still in reach.
