A hearse containing Stuart’s coffin passed in front of the shop in Muswell Hill Broadway on August 30, before going to Marylebone Crematorium in East Finchley for the service.

Around 50 customers and friends were there to meet Stuart on his final journey, and more joined the Martyn family at a “packed” service afterwards.

His son, William, who runs W Martyn said: “For a very difficult day, it went really well. It was great to see so many customers and friends outside.”

The service saw readings from Stuart’s grandchildren, and one from Barnet councillor John Marshall.

“It was so well packed out, which was nice, especially as an older gentleman,” said William.

“You’re always worried that when you get older you won’t have enough friends and family to be there.”

Stuart’s ashes will be buried with his grandfather William, who founded the shop in 1897, and his wife Bessie.
