Life is set to be a lot easier for cyclists and pedestrians thanks to a package of measures announced by the Mayor. The proposals include a bike hire scheme, similar to the Paris scheme, with up to 6,000 bikes located across docking stations every 300 metres, so Londoners and visitors can have quick and easy access to a bike. Cycling routes will be improved.
A dozen cycling corridors for commuters will be developed to enable commuters to use their bikes to get to work. Bike Zones for shoppers and the 'school run' in inner and outer London will be created, with cycle priority streets, 20mph speed limits and quick, clear and simple routes linking key local destinations.
The 'Legible London' signage system will be expanded, so pedestrians can more easily get around. And finally, the '200 Streets of Gold' - linking key local destinations like stations, schools and shops in inner and outer London, where walking will be made pleasant.
This is a 10-year programme and will not happen overnight but it looks like a package of measures to make a huge difference for cyclists and pedestrians. As someone who sold the family Volkswagen in 1981 and has not had a car since, I applaud the mayor's welcome emphasis on sustainable forms of transport, at last.
