TRAIL BLAZING Budgens is among three Crouch End businesses shortlisted for the council's City Growth Business Awards.

The event, which will take place next Thursday, celebrates businesses that have made the biggest impact in the borough in the past year.

Thornton's Budgens is up for best retailer. The independently-run supermarket in Crouch End's Broadway currently serves 22,000 customers per week and employs 85 people.

The shop has distinguished itself from other supermarkets by stocking and branding local produce and leading environmental awareness campaigns. These include the Pennies for Plastic Appeal, through which it donated a penny to charity for each plastic bag that was not used in the store.

Aravore in Park Road, Crouch End, is up for best growth business. Aravore manufactures and retails baby clothes made entirely from organic materials. They have been operating for three and a half years and supply over 60 independent retailers in Britain, Europe, the USA and Japan. They recently won a contract to supply to 16 Mothercare stores.

Bistro Aix, in Topsfield Parade, which offers delicious French cuisine, is also up for best restaurant, and Archway Road music venue The Red Hedgehog is also nominated in the entrepreneur category.

Leader of the Council George Meehan will present the awards with Reuben Lynch, who is hosting the evening.

Cllr Meehan said: "I am delighted to be introducing the City Growth Business Awards. They give important recognition to the role businesses play creating employment and helping Haringey become a more attractive place to live, work and visit. I look forward to seeing our business community come together for the awards and to acknowledge the excellent work that goes on."

There are nine awards up for grabs this year: best business support project; best employer; best entrepreneur; best growth business; best growth cultural business; best new business; best restaurant; best retailer; and most successful new creative business.

o The ceremony will take place at The Decorium in Wood Green from 6.30pm to midnight. For the results see next week's Broadway
