Star pupil, Lajoy Tucker, 16, from Tottenham achieved 10 A*, one A and one B. She said: "I feel amazing. I wasn't expecting these results. I thought I'd get less As. I can't speak I'm so happy. I'm really exited I now know I can do really well."

But there was a one per cent dip in this year's results at Highgate Wood, with 54 per cent of pupils achieving five A*s-C.

But the number of students who achieved five or more A* to C grades, including in maths and English, rose by nine per cent this year to the 30 per cent - reaching the benchmark set by the Government.

Paul Sutton, principal at Greig City, said: "The results are about five per cent higher than we were expected to achieve with this group of students based on their prior attainment and social circumstances.

"As always the entire school community can be proud of these students and shares in the sense of achievement that these results represent."

Councillor Liz Santry, cabinet member for children and young people, said: "These are really exceptional results - they represent a wonderful achievement.

"Both students and staff at our schools deserve tremendous credit for their work."

Nationally the overall A*-C pass rate now stands at 65.7 per cent, an increase of 2.4 percentage points.
