It seems that this is so that the garden can be recreated as it was in 1820, when the poet lived there. So the view on the way to Heath branch library is bleak indeed. That wonderful feeling evoked each spring when the tree flowered will be no more, alas. And this in a place dedicated to the 'thing of beauty' man.
The great London plane tree has been cleared of the mass of ivy which was engulfing it. That tree survives. Now that the Heath staff who tend the garden have acquired this new skill, perhaps they will relieve many trees on the Heath also infested.
Ivy is all right but must be controlled, otherwise it will dominate. Some is good, lots is very bad.
