It was tears of joy at Our Lady’s High School in Stamford Hill this morning as students celebrated their GCSE results.
The Gazette dropped by the Amhurst Park school to speak to the youngsters about their success and plans for the future.
Faith Babatunde couldn’t believe her grades when she opened the envelope this morning. Having missed about one fifth of the year through a medical condition, Faith was over the moon when she saw three 9s, three 8s, two 7s and an A in Mandarin.
“I thought I was going to do really badly,” she said. “Especially in science. I don’t think I could believe it and I felt like I was going to cry.”
Faith, who collected her results with her proud sister, is now planning on doing chemistry, biology, physics and psychology A-levels and wants to work in medicine.
Katie McCoughey was also celebrating after getting six 9s, an 8 and a 7.
“I thought I was going to get a 4 for maths, but I got a 7,” she said. “My family are really happy and we’re going to go out to celebrate.”
Beauty Odeyemi was pleased with her results, particularly the A in Mandarin. She is going on to study computing, geography and business.
Marie-Eunice Kouassi came over from the Ivory Coast in Year 5, and now has three 9s, three 8s one A and two 7s to her name.
Meanwhile Joy Adeogun, who has worked at the Hackney Empire, had her hopes of going to Cambridge to study drama boosted with her two A*s, an A, three 9s, three 8s and a 7.
And Emma Owens, who had terrible luck and was struck down with chicken pox three days before her first exam, came through to get two 9s, four 8s, two 7s and a 6.
“I didn’t expect it!” she told the Gazette. “I was so shocked I started crying and had to ring my mum, and then she started crying.
“I had to do my first week of exams in a room on my own but then I was allowed back in with the others. I’m going to go out with my family to celebrate.”
