A strong showing against Manchester City failed to bring reward last time out in the Premier League

Spurs travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers this weekend eager to avoid suffering back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, like they did during September.

Mauricio Pochettino’s team lost to Watford and Liverpool earlier in the year and before Monday, it was the club’s only reverses in the division this season.

A 1-0 defeat to Manchester City at the start of this week has put Tottenham Hotspur on the back foot again, however, and they desperately need a response in Saturday’s evening kick-off.

The clash at Molineux will start at 7.45pm and Spurs will look to keep up their terrific away form in the Premier League.

Pochettino’s men have already won at Newcastle United, Man United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Huddersfield Town and West Ham United this season and will hope to add Wolves to the list.

While Tottenham go into the league clash following a defeat in the division last time out, they did perform strongly at home to the current champions.

If the Lilywhites had taken the chances which come their way, the score may have been different, but City showed why they won the title with a hard-fought away win.

“The performance was very good because in front of us was Man City. I think after nearly six years here, it was the second time playing against Man City, with Southampton and Tottenham, I felt relaxed because we played well,” Pochettino said.

“We were so relaxed and competitive and we made the opponent suffer, and when you compare with last season, we didn’t compete against Man City, there or here at Wembley, but this was a game we felt we could win.

“We didn’t win, but it was important that we translated the message and we felt that it was possible to win.

“In the end, in football, you know there are many aspects that you cannot control, but the team showed belief.”

The defeat didn’t affect Spurs’ position in the table, as they stay in fifth spot, but they are now five points off joint-leaders City and Liverpool, while three behind third-placed Chelsea.

Arsenal are one point ahead of Tottenham too after 10 games, but the Lilywhites will look to steal a march on one of the Gunners or Reds with the two clubs meeting in Saturday’s 5.30pm kick-off.

Crucially though, Spurs must find a way to beat Wolves to avoid more league disappointment.
