Highlights for interiors fiends in Hampstead can be found at 44 Willoughby Road, a new-build, open plan studio house with integrated gardens on each level; Kebony House, a bungalow like no other; and a retrofitted property on Elizabeth Mews. London Design Biennale, September 7-27, Somerset House, WC2R 1LA
Coinciding with the London Design Festival, the first London Design Biennale has the theme of Utopia, to mark the 500th anniversary of Thomas More’s text, and showcases museums and design organisations from across the world. From the irreverent to the futuristic, 37 countries have come together to showcase ideas ranging from South African animal sculptures to a Mexican hexagonal Border City.
London Design Festival, September 17-25, Shoreditch, Clerkenwell, Islington, King’s Cross
The annual London Design Festival takes place across London but this year there are even more opportunities for north Londoners to stay local with focussed ‘design districts’ including the Shoreditch Design Triangle, Islington Design District, Clerkenwell Design Quarter and designjunction at King’s Cross (September 22-25). Shops and design studios will be participating with special events and shopping evenings.
Mark Wallinger at the Freud Museum, Until September 25, 20 Maresfield Gardens, NW3 5SX
The Freud Museum is always a good place to visit to soak up design tips from the master of psychoanalysis (specialism: couches) but it’s worth returning to for a look at the sculptural installation of Turner Prize-winning artist Mark Wallinger. In a piece titled ‘Self Reflection’, Wallinger has fixed a mirror across the ceiling of Freud’s study, offering a new perspective both on the room, and on the discipline of psychoanalysis itself.
Alfies Antique Market 40th birthday, September 20-24, Church Street, NW8 8DT
The popular antique market housed in an Art Deco building – previously Jordan’s Department Store – celebrates 40 years in business this September with a series of talks, demonstrations and workshops from the plethora of experts who peddle their wares in the building.
