Mylands Paints have coloured worlds from Hogwarts to Westeros, and now you can paint your home to match with their brand new collection
As Mrs Patmore struggled to boil her vegetable broth in the amber grey kitchen of Downton Abbey whilst upstairs deceit and villainy were taking hold in the amber smoking room of the grand Estate, Harry Potter flew past on his broomstick and laid it down in the grand old purple office of Professor Dumbledore. Below ground, Bond chased through the hallways of MI5, leaning against the dusky wall as his assailant darted out of view. Moving quickly, he bolted at the sight of The Beast dancing in the emerald green ballroom with the beautiful Belle.
An unlikely story, perhaps. But these tales all have one thing in common; their stories have all been illuminated by the bold colour of the rooms in which they stood.
Given the action, it might have escaped your attention, but the paint on the walls of Mrs Patmore’s kitchen, the deep hues of the smoking room and the green of the CGI studios which created Harry Potter’s world were actually expertly chosen and created by the paint specialists at Mylands.
Mylands Paint is Britain’s oldest family run paint and polishes manufacturer. Established in 1884, it has a long history of creating paints for clients far and wide and holds the Royal Warrant.

The brand has been central to the creation of sets and studios since before the emergence of Pinewood Studios in 1935. “Our paints have been capturing the essence of the British arts from the end of the 19th century right up to the present day,” says managing director Dominic Myland.
“Mylands literally grew up with the British film industry and this range of paints is the product of more than a century’s close collaboration with some of the greatest movie, TV and theatre productions of all time.”
Their emulsions are made using natural earth pigments to this day, which lends itself to the creation of scenery from the deep, ancient dungeons of Game of Thrones’ Westeros to the bright and irreverent colours of contemporary London in Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’ Diary.
It’s the paint that coats the walls of the homes of the residents of Albert Square and that backlit Jeremy Clarkson as he swooned over another toy. With recent projects including movie of the moment Beauty and The Beast, it seems the colours have been under our noses all along.
It’s no wonder then that we might want to recreate the tones of our favourite fantasy lands in our own homes. The new anthology of twenty colours released by the brand and reformulated for the home includes four acrylic metallic hues, bang on trend this season.
Paints are also available in Marble Matt, a washable emulsion for interior walls and ceilings and Wood & Metal in matt, eggshell and gloss for interior and exterior use.
