Rachel Winham Interior Design on how they created a bespoke show home in Kidderpore Green - plus tips for decorating with grey
“We believe in liveable luxury,” explains Rachel Winham, director of Rachel Winham Interior Design. “We love creating unique bespoke items with uncompromising detailing but it has to be functional.”
Uncompromising detail is an apt description for the Caulfield House show apartment. Set in the new Kidderpore Green development from Barratt Homes, the location, with its proximity to Hampstead Heath, is already a huge draw. It was up to Winham to create a home that could seal the deal for potential buyers.
“When designing a show apartment, we are often given carte blanche to create what we think will work best, so we tend to design a scheme where we would want to live,” explains Winham.
Who wouldn’t want to live in such surroundings? The apartment strikes a balance between glamour and comfort, at once aspirational and inviting. In Winhams own words, Caulfield house is “graceful, refined, and welcoming.”
The reception room is a study in sumptuousness, fitted out in light oak, chenille and silks presided over by a bronze mirror.
“The living room has stunning views of the city so we used mirrored panelling in the bespoke joinery to reflect the views and commissioned a local artist to paint two watercolour paintings of London landscapes,” says Winham. “We wanted to ensure the joinery remained a feature but was not overpowering and the fabrics were chosen with comfort and indulgence in mind.”
Winham works with he power of three when creating her stylishly understated colour schemes, teaming a base with a tonal shade topped off with an accent to make it pop. “We used a warm palette of cream, bronze and navy in the living room, in contrast to the calming tones of purples and soft greys in the master bedroom,” she says.
Soft greys are having more than a moment in interiors, but it’s not the easiest colour to work with.
“Use the shade of grey that best resonates with you,” suggests Winham. “There are warm greys and cool greys. Given its lack of personality, grey is a great tone for a neutral background and can be paired with almost any other colour to create a scheme that is a reflection of you.”
