Love animal print but hate animal suffering? PETA’s Vegan Homeware Awards celebrate cruelty-free interiors pieces to style your home
Already thinking about snuggling down with a comforting throw in the winter months, but distracted by adorable sheep bouncing around the hills in the summer? Love leopard print but conscious of their endangered species status? Anti-fur but pro-cuddly blankets? Now one animal charity has a solution to all your homeware-related ethical dilemmas.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have announced their 2017 winners of the Vegan Homeware Awards. Far from being populated with obscure and niche vegan stores, the list of winners include popular high-street chains such as Heals, Ikea and Habitat, proving you don’t have to travel far to find cruelty-free homewares.
Amongst the winners was Emily Turnbull, a London-based vegan interior designer who has decorated homes in the Hampstead area. The Influencer Award winner’s Studio Can-Can has decked out the interiors of vegan cafes, hotels and Fred Perry stores. “Home is where the heart is – and compassionate consumers are driving the demand for beautiful vegan homeware,” says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “Forward-thinking designers are experimenting with sustainable and cutting-edge vegan materials and offering a great variety of cruelty-free choices to suit every home and budget.”
Made from Birch wood and polyester, the Faux Cowhide Vintage Style two seater sofa from Rockett St George is finished in an on-trend cowhide print that screams retro and is available for £625.00. To compliment the sofa, Ikea have been awarded for their faux-sheepskin Tejn rug whilst Monsoon’s velvet tassel cushion with copper threads adds a touch of glamour.
Alternatively, try Oliver Bonas’ woven, acrylic-mix pom pom throw or Heals faux-lynx fur throw.
In the bedroom, Debenhams’ down-free bedding made from hollowfibre polyester can be dressed up in silk-free Egyptian cotton Sateen sheets from Habitat. For the bed itself, try John Lewis’ Viscool memory foam mattress, made from soybean oil and natural balm that is claimed to absorb body heat to enable a more soothing night’s rest cocooned from the world by Zara’s grey velvet curtains.
To take advantage of the home scents trend, try Le Labo’s home fragrances, or Pacifica’s soy candles. For a local alternative, Bubbles and Light on Flask Walk stock an array of handmade vegan soaps and candles.
Also on the list were two chairs, one from Made.com, whose Keira Office Chair is made in black PU leather and brass, and the Beleaf Chair from Slovakian Šimon Kern. Winner of the Innovation Award, the chair is made from recycled leaves and bio-resin.
