Housman wrote his most famous work, A Shropshire Lad, while a resident at Byron Cottage on North Road, which is now on the market with Savills Hampstead for £2.5 million. A blue plaque recognising the prestige of the cottage’s history is proudly on display at the front of the Grade II-listed property.

The charming family home features five bedrooms, three reception rooms, a kitchen/breakfast room and three bathrooms. Outside, there is a pretty lawn to the front and a west-facing walled garden at the rear.

The property dates back to the beginning of the eighteenth century, with original period features including exposed beams, sash windows and original fireplaces on display throughout. The cottage is located on the western side of North Road, opposite Highgate School and close to nearby green spaces in the form of Hampstead Heath, Highgate Woods and Waterlow Park.

James Diaper, an associate director at Savills, said: “Byron Cottage is an impressive period home in its own right.

“Sitting in one of the most popular areas of Highgate Village, and close to all local amenities and transport links, we expect the sale to generate a great deal of interest.

“However, the addition of the blue plaque and the history surrounding Housman and his time at the property really adds an element of prestige.

“He is one of Highgate’s most notable residents and his works continue to be published and read across the world.

“The sale presents an opportunity for someone to own a slice of Highgate’s history and an elegant period home, with the scope to put their own stamp on it.”

Housman lived at Byron Cottage between 1885 and 1905, studying at University College London and writing a bulk of the 63 poems that collectively made up A Shropshire Lad while living there.

After he was initially turned down by a publisher, Housman partly subsidised the printing of the poems at his own expense, and after a slow start sales soon picked up and by the beginning of World War One, the works were widely known across the UK.
