Campaigners are calling on Camden Council to save a much-loved mural on a community centre in Hampstead which is set to be sold.
The large mosaic, which was commissioned from Archway artist Jim Anderson in 2000, is plastered across Fleet Community Centre in Lawn Road, which could be demolished when it is sold by the town hall.
This week the Belsize Conservation Area Advisory Committee and former councillor Gerry Harrison, who helped convert a launderette into the community hub, piled pressure on the town hall to preserve the artwork made of china and glass.
Mr Harrison, a councillor between 1994 and 2002, said: “If Camden has any sense, it will enforce a section 106 [planning agreement] on the sale of these assets, save this mural and re-erect it somewhere safer.”
The council is hoping to make the preservation of the mural a condition of sale.
