This black and white image of the locally famed Little Venice canal boat, Jason, as it looked in 1963.

It is just one of the many historic photographs due to go on show in Westminster next month as part of a major exhibition at Westminster Archives.

The centre in Victoria is holding an open day on October 9 to explore Paddington’s heritage.

Visitors to the event will be able to view the treasures of the archives and have a behind-the-scenes look at the conservation studio and stores.

There will be an opportunity to meet local history experts and areas of discussion will include the redevelopment of Paddington after the Blitz and the transformation of the area’s waterworks system.

Visitors will be given the opportunity to visit a conservation lab where staff will talk them through methods of preservation and conservation. Historical prints, photographs, rare maps and a host of other items will be available to view from an extensive collection on the area.

Westminster Council’s archivist, Trish Fallon, said: “We are hoping to encourage people to explore what the Archives Centre has to offer and to gain fascinating insight in to the wealth of history Paddington has to offer.”

Sessions will take place either in the morning from 11.00am until 2.00pm or afternoon from 1.00pm until 4.00pm .

The event is free of charge, but booking in advance is advised. For further information on this event or Westminster Archives’ upcoming events log on to www.westminster.gov.uk/archives or call 020 7641 5180.
