A history walk through Belsize Park revealed the unique connections the area has with prestigious Eton College School, dating back to the time of King Henry VI.
Historian Aileen Hammond explained to people on the walk that the land around Adelaide Road and Eton Avenue was given to King Henry VI, who founded the elite boarding school 600 years ago, back in the days when Belsize Park was rural land.
The land remained in the hands of the school and in the 1820s it commissioned a number of buildings in the area.
As a result, many of the nearby streets - such as Oppidans Road, which also refers to an academic scholar at Eton - were named after the school.
Each year Belsize Residents Association takes members on a historical tour of different areas, exploring their architecture and legacy. Marion Hill, a member of the association, said: “The walks are a very interesting way to learn about our area and learn about the architecture.”
