Camden Council hands over its first council house to a tenant, 15 months after controversial 'right to buy' legislation came into force. The chairman of the Housing Management Committee says they regard the sale "with the utmost distaste".

Novelist Stella Gibbons, who lives in Oakeshott Avenue, Highgate, celebrates her 80th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the publication of her classic comic novel Cold Comfort Farm, written while she was living in Hampstead.

Herbert Suzbach, 88, who lives in Aberdare Gardens, West Hampstead, claims the unique distinction of having been decorated by the Kaiser in World War I, by King George VI in World War II and now by the Queen with an OBE.

A man who admits running a brothel at a hotel in Argyle Street, King's Cross, tells Clerkenwell court: "How else do you pay the rates and the bills in this area?
