Camden's rates are now so high that further big increases could give rise to "serious collection difficulties", the District Auditor warns. He is unhappy with Camden increasing rates by 94 per cent in four years, the highest in the country.

Ken Livingstone has lost his legal qualification to remain a member of Camden Council, representing Kilburn ward for four years, as he has moved out of the borough and his name is no longer on the Camden electoral roll.

Ben Nicholson, one of the enduring giants of British art, dies after nine years living in Pilgrim's Lane, Hampstead. He was 87. One of the world's best known abstract painters, in the 1930s he lived and worked in the Mall Studios, off Tasker Road, Hampstead, where he met and married the sculptor Barbara Hepworth.
