Rags to riches stories don’t come much more glamorous than this. A flat in a block originally built for Irish migrants but which became one of the most desirable addresses in London with residents including Mick Jagger and Joan Collins, has come on the market

The block is in Marylebone, a district which has seen a similar upturn in fortunes from its early years as a railway area to its current incarnation as London’s chicest neighbourhood.

Harley House on Marylebone Road was built 120 years ago to house Irish Catholics who moved to London to work as servants for rich families.

At this time the area was a byword for slum life and George Bernard Shaw used it to signify Eliza Doolittle’s humble roots in My Fair Lady.

Decades later, proximity to Harley Street, Regent’s Park and all the delights of central London attracted Mick Jagger and Joan Collins to the block.

Sir Thomas Beecham, founder of the London Philharmonic Orchestra also lived in the building, perhaps attracted by the Royal Academy of Music nearby.

Nowadays, Marylebone draws overseas families, as well as business people, political dynasties and a younger cosmopolitan and celebrity set.

The block also boasts a private communal garden.

Vic Chhabria, Managing Director at Rescorp Residential commented: “We are delighted that we have been instructed as the sole agent for this apartment at Harley House. The security gated building is one of the most enchanting mansion buildings in Marylebone and as such we’ve already had a lot of interest.”

“The stone façade, spacious accommodation and detailed features whisk us back to a time gone by, if walls could talk, I think we would hear some fascinating stories as this block has been home to a variety of well known writers, musicians, actors and politicians among others.”
