A lawyer is calling for schools across Camden to raise money as part of global efforts to rid west Africa of Ebola.

Jessica Learmond-Criqui has urged 95 primary and secondary schools to donate to King’s College London’s appeal for funds to send specialist doctors to Sierra Leone.

Several have signed up to help the cause, including UCL Academy in Swiss Cottage, St Anthony’s School in Hampstead, Brookfield Primary School in West Hampstead, and Hampstead Hill School in Hampstead.

Eleanor Palmer Primary School in Kentish Town has already launched a separate campaign to save its partner school in Sierra Leone from permanent closure, after it shut in July under orders of the government.

Money raised will be used to send doctors from the King’s Centre for Global Health, in London, to Sierra Leone and support their work treating Ebola patients.

Just £10 buys soap and blankets, £50 pays for a personal protection suit and £1,000 funds a doctor’s flight to Sierra Leone.

Ms Learmond-Criqui said: “I want to appeal to people’s sense of urgency, of need and of the importance of eradicating this global killer. If we can reduce the rate of infection there, the chances of it spreading further afield will decrease.”
