Providing youngsters with the summer of a lifetime is the motivation for a St John’s Wood school which has been putting on camps for more than a quarter of a century.

Once again the American School in London is calling on students – aged between four and 18 – from all schools to get stuck into an exciting and challenging programme of activities between June 19 and August 25.

Based at the school’s Waverley Place campus and playing fields in Canons Park, the emphasis is placed on finding something for everyone, from cooking to ceramics and drama to basketball.

Sport is an integral part of the programme and the school – founded in 1951 – opened a brand new aquatic and fitness centre last summer, complete with a state-of-the-art, six-lane, 25-metre swimming pool, which has proved a huge hit with students and adults alike.

A healthy 10 weeks of fun blends a dynamic mix of indoor and outdoor sports, including swimming, football, golf, archery, tennis, fencing and recreational activities – students sign up for one week, or elect to attend all 10, with a door-to-door bus service an optional extra.

Older students are encouraged to make the most of being in the capital by getting involved in photography, ‘habitat for humanity’, yoga, mindfulness, and crew camp rowing at the school’s boathouse on the Thames.

A spokesman for the school said: “Participants discover new interests, develop skills, build confidence, and learn how to work and play as a group—and loads of fun is guaranteed.

“Programmes provide a nurturing, inclusive environment, supervised by experienced and enthusiastic camp counsellors—and camp director Trevor Jones has been on board from the beginning.”

From week two, children aged between four and six can take part in the popular discovery camp, with field trips to parks and weekly swimming opportunities – early enrolment is encouraged.

Most activities start at 8.50am at the Waverley Place campus and finish at 3.15pm. Students depart for Canons Park at 9am each weekday and return to the school just after 3pm.

Children aged between nine and 18 who would like to use the new pool are encouraged to sign up for ‘stay and swim’, between 3.30pm and 5pm. The school also offers individual and small-group swimming lessons seven days a week that can be chosen independently of or in addition to other camp offerings.
