Actresses Juliet Stevenson and Jemma Redgrave have added their names to a campaign for a new crossing outside Highgate Junior School.

The campaign was launched by a group of the school’s parents, who are concerned about child safety as there is nowhere for pupils to cross near the school entrance in Hampstead Lane.

They are asking Haringey Council to install crossings at both ends of Bishopswood Crescent.

More than 100 parents took part in a demonstration outside the school on Wednesday morning to show the town hall the strength of feeling over the issue.

Elizabeth Knowles, who has two children at the junior school and one at the senior, said: “Despite the terrible weather, about 125 people turned out to show their support, which was brilliant.

“We’re asking people to sign our petition before we present it to Haringey Council. These crossings would ensure that all pedestrians and cyclists can cross Hampstead Lane safely and have access to the Heath.”

The group chose to launch their campaign on Go Green Week when pupils at the school are being encouraged to walk or cycle to school.

Anyone who wishes to sign the petition should visit www.petitiononline.com/safexn6/petition.html

Haringey Council was unavailable to comment.
