Herts/Middlesex One: Saracens Amateurs 10 Hendon 22

Hendon recorded their first success of 2018 with a 22-10 triumph at Saracens Amateurs in Herts/Middlesex One.

The visitors were on the defensive for the first 15 minutes as Saracens mounted several attacks, pinning Hendon inside their own half.

However, the away defence was only breached when the hosts converted a penalty to take a 3-0 lead.

Hendon eventually found their gear, with wing Dan Waterson running half the pitch before being stopped short, gaining a penalty that narrowly missed its target.

From the next attack by the visitors, Saracens conceded a penalty kicked which Cian Hynes to touch.

After collecting the lineout, scrum half JP Cremin fed Mike Culhane from the back of the maul, with the skipper crashing over for a try converted by Hynes.

Hendon were now on the front foot, with a deep kick from Hynes pinning the hosts inside their own 22.

From the lineout, the visiting pack pushed towards the line, with Harry Charles, making his seasonal bow, dotting down as Hendon led 12-3 at the interval.

The away forwards continued to dominate in the second period, with Hynes kicking another penalty to touch deep inside the Saracens half.

After claiming the lineout, Hendon maintained their dominance up front, with Charles going over for his second score of the match, though the extras were missed.

However, a period of pressure from Saracens saw them hit back soon after with a penalty try to cut the visitors’ lead to 17-10.

Needing a response of their own, Hendon wing Chris Kiyingi embarked on a fine run that took him into the opposition 22.

The visitors recycled the ball well, with TJ O’Sullivan feeding Tom Mathius to cross in the corner to collect a bonus-point try.

Coach Brimah Kebbie was full of praise as the team had responded to the tactics worked out in an extra tough training session in the week.

Hendon return to action on Saturday when they entertain Wasps Amateurs, looking to build on their first success of the calendar year.
