Sarries fullback impressed in Aviva Premiership triumph at home to Exiles

Director of rugby Mark McCall was full of praise for full-back Alex Goode after his man-of-the-match display helped Saracens to a 44-13 victory over London Irish.

Goode collected his own excellent chip to set up Chris Wyles for the bonus point score on the hour mark after internationals Mako Vunipola, Owen Farrell and Liam Williams had all crossed.

Farrell scored 19 points in this Aviva Premiership contest, with Nathan Earle grabbing a late brace of tries.

Goode was again overlooked by Eddie Jones for the England squad this week but Mark McCall felt he and Welsh international Williams were his side’s outstanding performers.

“He (Goode) had a magnificent game in every respect. They kicked the ball a lot and we had to be good and secure under the high ball,” McCall said.

“But when their kicks became a bit more wayward his counter-attacking set the game on fire he knows where the space is. His contribution to the fourth try was amazing.

“He had a great game and fingers crossed he gets what he deserves sometime.

“He (Williams) has perhaps surprised a few people just how good an all-round a player he is.

“He’s unbelievable in the air but does score tries and is aggressive, physical and a brilliant defender.”

London Irish remain without a win since the opening day of the season and their only try at Allianz Park came from a driving maul, with skipper David Paice dotting down.

Irish director of rugby Nick Kennedy conceded that the defeat demonstrated his side still have a long way to go in the competition, despite an impressive win in Europe last week.

He explained: “We have to play and concentrate for 80 minutes but I thought that last half hour was just about how good Saracens are, they’re years ahead of us on our journey.

“We’ve been together a very short time, especially in the Premiership, we’re seven games into our rebuilding.

“We have ended every game strongly so far, we have been winning second halves and backing our fitness and seem to get better as the games (have) gone on - but today was the opposite.”
