Saracens flanker Jacques Burger admits his return from a career threatening 18-month knee injury has gone even better than he’d hoped after this week collecting the Aviva Premiership player of the month award for September.
The openside returned to action for Sarries at the tail end of last term but with a summer pre-season under his belt he has turned in some impressive performances to help the club race through the first five weeks with a perfect record to sit top of the league table.
The Namibian international told premiershiprugby.com: “It’s amazing, it’s been a blessing being back playing again and getting this award is obviously very rewarding. If the team’s playing well it’s easy to get stuck in, it’s a great honour.
“People weren’t too kind to me in this new start of the Premiership season but I suppose it’s part of the game, if you ask the back-rowers you’ll see they’ve got a few cuts and scars along the way.
“The team was so settled last year and they did so well, so it’s good to come back in and get regular game time.
“Doing well is very rewarding so I knew it would take a bit of time to get back to the form that I wanted to be in.
“You are a bit rushed when you’ve not played for a while so getting back to regular starts, regular game time is good for me and good for my rugby in the next couple of months. I’m excited.”
