Captain Tom hoping in-form UCS Old Boys can keep on winning for promotion push

PUBLISHED: 12:30 13 October 2017

UCS Old Boys made it three wins out of three in Herts Middlesex Division one with a 33-29 success at Actonians.

And captain Tom Arnold believes promotion is on the cards if they keep up their recent fine form this season.

Fly-half Charlie Esdon was the star of the show with a fine 50-metre try and several conversions to help them to victory, despite Actonians mounting a late charge.

Arnold was delighted with the victory, and is eager for his side to make it four on the trot when facing Barnet.

“Three wins out of the last three is all we could ask for,” said Arnold.

“I’m looking forward to our game against Barnet and if we keep playing the way we are now, promotion is on the cards.”

Director of Rugby Nick Gourlay added: “To have won the last three games is a brilliant achievement. We won the game because we decided to play our game instead of theirs. We should have a very good season.”

UCS broke the deadlock when Stefan Filip motored towards the line before giving a final pass to Tom Sanders who swerved over to score, with Esdon converting.

Actonians responded and scored their opening try from a driving maul in the corner, but a missed conversion left the Old Gowers with a 7- 5 lead.

Another unconverted Actonians try followed, before Will Jones went over on the stroke of half time and gave the visitors a 12-10 advantage at the interval.

Some quick thinking after the restart from scrum-half Nathaniel Breakwell saw him take a quick penalty and go over, before Esdon added the extras to make it 19-10.

Old Gowers were in command now and Chris Bean scored their fourth try of the game, which was successfully converted by Esdon to put them 26-17 in front, before Esdon scored the try of the game as he swerved and wrong-footed several Actonian defenders to score under the posts and then add the extras.

At 33-17 the lead looked unassailable, but Old Gowers produced a sloppy period, conceding a number of penalties which allowed the hosts to reply.

The scoring was not over there, though, as a late try for the hosts pulled the deficit back to just four at 33-29, but there wasn’t enough time for any further score as UCS held on for the third win on the spin.
