UCS Old Boys’ director of rugby Geoff Boxer believes his side have shown the quality they have throughout the team after nine different players scored tries to record the first team’s biggest league victory of the century.

UCS ran in 14 tries as they thrashed Hillingdon Abbots 82-5 at home on Saturday, making a winning start to their campaign in Herts/Middlesex Division One after their scheduled opener against Hendon last week was postponed due to an administrative error.

Winger Will Doble scored a hat-trick while Ahmed Ghanem, Matt Jacobs and Lloyd Hughes went over twice – and Arthur Coates, Elliot Duke, Ben Boyles, captain Tom Arnold and Joe Samuel also crossed the whitewash.

It was the Old Boys’ first team’s biggest win in the league since the start of the millennium, and Boxer is excited about the campaign ahead.

He told Ham&High Sport: “Clearly it was a one-sided game but we’ve actually played three games against sides in our league now and we’ve won all three, although two of them were friendlies. We won 46-5 against Wasps and then beat Hendon 19-10.

“We’re in quite a good place at the moment. I think we’re a really good team this year without having any stars. While we don’t have the size of some of the sides, we’ve got a lot of mobility.

“The way we’re coaching this year is that it’s much more of a 15-man game and I think that’s really paying dividends - but to do that you need to be fitter and we’re certainly fitter this year.

“I think you can cope with a lack of size at Level Nine. When we were playing much higher up you can’t do that - you have to have some power as well as pace and everything else.

“At Level Nine you can trade a little bit of power and size for mobility and organisation. We’ve got a very good line-out and all the things are going well this year.

“I would say we’re one of the fitter, more mobile sides in the league. But what makes us very strong in a way is that, although we maybe don’t have the height and size of some of the sides, we’ve got a very strong front row.

“It’s almost like playing a strong front row and a mobile back five in your scrummage, and that can be a good mixture for this level of rugby.”

Boxer added: “We know it’s going to be much harder than certainly two of the games we’ve played so far, so we’re under no illusions. Hillingdon are going through a tough time.

“But, having said that, scoring 14 tries is never easy and we’re looking forward to a good season. We’re away at Saracens Amateur on Saturday, where we’re quite strong.

“We know these things are cyclical. We had some great years at a higher level but we started to go down a bit and had a couple of years of losing games. Then when you win a game like this, suddenly availability becomes very good the next week.

“Rugby’s like that. It’s a very humbling experience - sometimes you’re on the end of beatings, and other times you’re giving them out. That’s the way it is.”
